Carrières de Lezennes: Heritage Day and exhibition

on September 20, 2024

The Heritage Days will be held in Lezennes to discover the heritage of the underground quarries. It will be possible to visit a small area of the quarries during these days, which will take place on 21 and 22 September 2024. Visits must be booked in advance at the Town Hall by calling 03 20 91 59 01.

This year, the visit will be combined with an exhibition to be held at the Médiathèque in Lezennes from 20 September to 27 October. The exhibition has been put together by the LGCgE (Civil Engineering and Geo-Environment Laboratory), the PIRVI (CRIStAL Laboratory), supported by the scientific mediation programme of the “Les sciences infusent” research promotion department of the University of Lille, and several collaborations.

This exhibition will give you an in-depth look at the subject through posters and display cases, as well as a virtual reality workshop where you can take a virtual tour of the magical places in these quarries, including the famous Blue Lake. Equipped with a virtual reality headset, you’ll be able to immerse yourself in these underground passages (around ten rooms) and (virtually) meet the people who shaped the life of these quarries: quarrymen, soldiers, refugees, inspectors…

The exhibition will be open to the public until the end of October, when the Médiathèque is open. It is open to all, and will feature hands-on tables and games for children.
