The other side of words: Haptics

on October 22, 2023

The study of haptics is interdisciplinary. For example, biologists have identified the mechanisms underlying this sense. Their studies reveal that tactile sensations are generated by four types of sensory neurons called mechanoreceptors, characterised by their varying size and depth in the skin. This diversity enables them to detect skin deformations of varying speed and amplitude. Other types of sensors located in muscles, tendons and joints perceive sensations of force, known as kinaesthesia. So haptic sensations encompass a wide range of perceptions, including vibrations, textures, temperature, hardness, weight and shape at different scales.
