The digital sciences suffer from a gender imbalance. To remedy this, the parity-equality unit of the CNRS’s Institute for infromation sciences and their interactions, with the support and funding of its management, wanted to shine the spotlight on female researchers, teacher-researchers and engineers in the field. The aim is to make the digital sciences more accessible by showing the diversity of the subjects explored, which resonate with major societal issues. We wanted to give a voice to today’s women scientists, far from the banality, “explains Laure Thiébault, a member of the team made up of scientists and communicators. The use of comics as a modern, desecrated medium of expression quickly became an obvious choice. The result: 12 profiles by illustrator Léa Castor, embodying science in the making in as many key themes. Published by CNRS Editions at the end of 2021, the comic strip “Les décodeuses du numérique” has already sold or distributed nearly 12,000 copies. 3,000 secondary schools and one in 5 middle schools in France have received it, along with additional online material.
