AI and criminal law. Algorithms are everywhere. For some time now, what is commonly known as AI has been making its appearance in a wide variety of fields, and seems to ba having an increasing influence on our lives. AI can be exciting because of the progress it offers (in medicine, education, etc.), but it is just as frightening because of the risks it can entail (job losses, mass control, autonomous lethal weapons systems, etc.). The same applies to criminal law. AI is not called upon to play a role in this area, but several roles. More specifically, it is intended to be used by offenders, or even to be an offender itself, but also to improve the recording of offences, the identification of offenders, their sentencing, etc. AI will not be a ‘cop-out’ of the law. AI will not be a ‘cop or a thief’ but a ‘policeman and a thief’! As we explore these two roles for AI, we will have the opportunity to look at a few use cases that will highlight the benefits of collaboration between AI specialists and criminal lawyers.
