Boxing: how video analysis can be used to better understand fights and help athletes

on April 27, 2023

The women’s world English boxing championships were held in New Delhi, India, from 15 to 26 March 2023, while the men’s championships will be held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from 1 to 14 May 2023. An amateur boxing match takes place in a square ring over 3 rounds of 3 minutes each, with 1 minute to recover between each round. The winner of the bout is decided by a vote of 3 to 5 judges around the ring, who assess the number of quality punches on target, dominance through technical and tactical superiority and competitiveness (expressed by activity and commitment). Athletes must therefore be able to control the space in the ring, manage time, impose a rhythm on their opponent, propose a varied, offensive and aggressive boxing style, create uncertainty and propose means of defence. At the end of each round, the judges assess the two boxers with a score ranging from 7 to 10 based on the judging criteria mentioned. With the PerfAnalytics project, we are working with the Boxing Federation, which wants to objectivise the assessment of boxer’s production during bouts. The approach involves collecting data from training and competition in order to digitise and analyse the determinants of performance and identify individual characteristics in order to propose specific adaptation keys to the competition, the different weight categories and the strengths and weaknesses revealed by French athletes.
