In the space of a few years, digital services have invaded our daily lives. Our dependence on the many benefits they provide is growing every day. Whether from a computer, a smartphone, a television or a connected loudspeaker, we are constantly calling on numerous servers scattered around the world to accomplish various personal and professional tasks. While the environmental impact of computers and telephones is becoming increasingly apparent to their users, the impact of servers still regularly raises questions. In particular, date centres - huge warehouses housing several thousand servers - are often criticised for their negative impact on the environment. All the players in the digital services ecosystem - from hardware manufacturers and cloud operators to customers and citizens - can tackle this problem by encouraging the emergence of more sober parctices in the use, design and hosting of online services.
