Beyond cryptocurrencies, what can blockchains be used for ?

on May 26, 2022

Blockchains are now well known thanks to cryptocurrencies, in particular the famous Bitcoin, and “decentralised finance” (or “DeFi” in English). But they can have applications other than financial ones. In fact, blockchains simply allow partners to exchange information without necessarily trusting each other, because this technology makes it possible to build a shared, unforgeable register (like an account book), so that information exchanges can be fully traced. We generally underestimate the importance of registers, which are essential to our social and legal existence: civil status, social security, land registry, bank registers, for example. You can never remove information from them, only add to it at the end, and all additions are signed by their author.
