AI and music: a team from the CRIStAL laboratory takes 3rd place in the AI Song Contest 2021

on July 7, 2021

The Algomus computer music team from the CRIStAL laboratory, with composer and sound designer Sebastien Gulluni (sebastiengulluni.com), finished 3rd (and first French team, and first “instrumental” team) in the AI Song Contest 2021 with the track “The last moment before you fly”, in a minimalist ambient electronica style. In this international competition, 38 teams proposed new approaches to co-creativity between AI and humans. The teams were decided by a double vote from a jury chaired by Imogen Heap and the public. The competition was won by an American team with the song “Listen to your body choir”.

Jury member and composer Mark Simos says of the track by Sébastien Gulluni and the Algomus team: “What was really unique about that project is the way that the composer got a chance to train the data on their specific individual artistic work, so they felt like they were actually having a kind of conversation with their own sort of stylistic corpus, which gave it a really kind of personal feel.” Indeed, the chords and melodies for “The last moment before you fly” were generated by AI methods learning from corpora provided by the composer, then selected and reworked. AI also contributed to the structure and its variations.
