The development of participatory democracy has led to the emergence of new forms of consultation, with a vast amount of data to be analysed. The responses are complex, as everyone expresses themselves without any constraints of style or format. Artificial intelligence methods have therefore been used to analyse these responses, but are the results really reliable? We looked at analysing the responses to the Great National Debate. As part of the development of participatory democracy, various initiatives have been launched in France in 2019 and 2020, including the Great National Debate and the Citizen’s Climate Convention. Any consultation can be biased: those concerning the wording of the questions or the representativeness of the respondent population are well known. But there can also be biases in the analysis of responses, particularly when this is done automatically.
